Conjugal violence: An inspiring testimony from a woman who changed her life with martial arts
I LOVE THE WOMAN I HAVE BECOME, BECAUSE I FOUGHT TO BECOME HER.

I will always remember the day my heart broke. The moment that I realized that the person I loved would want to hurt me that bad-that whether or not I lived or died, was literally in his hands. I believe that there was a loss of my innocence and those of my children with this senseless act of violence: the undeniable fact that what happened to us, will always be with us. We can never go back to before… But after, I learned that that is ok! You can’t go back in the past..
But you can use it as a stepping stone to greater things, a greater future. And so that was what I decided to do. The day I walked into my first self defence class at L’academie d’arts martiaux Brossard, was the day I chose not to have the label of victim. It completely changed my life…it was a way for me to move forward, to become stronger, more loving, more compassionate, see my self worth, and more able to stand up for myself and my children. I REFUSE THIS VIOLENCE AND WILL NOT SUCCUMB TO IT. No one should! Ladies..violence and abuse come in all shapes, forms, and sizes. And in No WAY is it OK!!! Get out! Write down everything, document incidents, talk to someone.. Anyone.. Go to a shelter, see a friend, the police..Make an exit strategy.. And most importantly.. Learn to defend yourself. It completely changed my life and my sense of being. Self defence classes turned into a passion for MMA. I will always be grateful for how welcomed I was at l’academie d’arts martiaux Brossard. I walked in broken and lost, unable to make eye contact, to proudly wearing a MMA GIRLS shirt. I remember all to well the feelings of embarrassment through out the course of my marriage.
Embarrassment for myself, my children, my friends and my family. Embarrassed that I loved someone that didn’t love me back in the same or proper way. Embarrassed that I was in such a tug of war. Embarrassed to talk to anyone about what was happening or what I have been through. This feeling stayed with me through out a decade, and still surfaces now and again. I felt like the smallest person ever walking into the Brossard academy of martial arts. But slowly, step by step, technique by technique, that feeling, slowly went further and further away. They make the techniques easy to learn..fun to learn, and easy to remember. This school will give you so much more then defence techniques.
You become part of a team, part of a family, and you know they will always be on your side of the ring, cheering you on, whether big or small steps, big or small dreams. I highly recommend this academy to all walks of life. To everyone. After alot of rehabilitation, family and friend support, intensive therapy, talking, and growing over the past three years… I could say that I’m not the scared woman that I used to be. I walk with my head up high, and am proud of my life, even those darker years, and mostly I am proud of myself. My past doesn’t define me anymore. It prepared me. I am not what happened to me, I am what I chose to become…and right now, I am a humble, happy and safe mother. I am a mother that would do anything for her children.
A woman who now looks up. A woman that is proud. I woman that fell in love with martial arts. A woman that is not scared anymore. A quote that has changed my life ” YOU HAVE THE DIVINE ANIMAL RIGHT TO PROTECT YOUR LIFE AND THOSE OF YOUR OFFSPRINGS” ( movie: Enough) I’m so grateful now, that I feel sometimes, I’m the lucky one: I’m not in the viscous cycle anymore. However, there are far too many woman that suffer in silence..far too many excruciating, horrific, sad news stories about conjugal violence. And this silence needs to be broken! !! Let’s break the cycle together. We can all be the Jennifer Lopez’s in the movie Enough… We all have it in us to learn defence techniques…this knowledge is empowering.. Let’s break the silence together at L’academie D’arts martiaux Brossard. May you all be at peace, May you all be safe, May you all know that you are loved.
